A healthcare power of attorney is also known by several other names, including medical power of attorney, advance directive, healthcare proxy, healthcare agent, or patient advocate. These terms refer to the legal document that allows you to appoint someone to make healthcare decisions on your behalf if you become incapacitated and unable to make those decisions yourself.
A healthcare power of attorney can be considered an advance healthcare directive, which is a broader term that encompasses various legal documents related to end-of-life care and medical decision-making. An advance healthcare directive can include a living will, which outlines your preferences for medical treatment in specific situations, as well as a healthcare medical power of attorney, medical power of attorney or healthcare proxy.
In some states, the term “advance healthcare directive” is used to refer specifically to a document that combines both a living will and a healthcare power of attorney. In this case, the advance healthcare directive includes instructions for your healthcare agent (the person you appoint as your healthcare power of attorney) to follow regarding your medical treatment preferences, as outlined in the living will portion of the document.
